Stephen Decatur Smith Joins the Department of Music Faculty

March 2, 2012

The Department of Music is very pleased to announce that Stephen Decatur Smith will be joining our faculty in the fall of 2012, as an Assistant Professor of Music History and Theory. Smith comes to us from NYU, where he is finishing a dissertation entitled “Transfigured Flesh: Adorno, Natural History, and Musical Modernism.”

Smith’s scholarship focuses on the intersections and mutual resonances between modern music and modern philosophy. His writing has appeared in Popular Music (an article coauthored with Martin Scherzinger) and the Journal of Music Theory (in a special issue co-edited by Smith and Brian Kane). Another essay on Adorno, music, and Husserlian phenomenology will appear in a forthcoming issue of the Contemporary Music Review.

Smith has served as chair of the Music and Philosophy Study Group of the American Musicological Society, and has received fellowships from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst as well as multiple awards from NYU to support his research and teaching. At Stony Brook, Smith plans to teach courses on the Second Viennese School, music and the transforming status of the human in the 20th century, 20th-century opera, media and technology, and sound studies.
