David Blake (Ph.D., Music History/Theory, 2014) Awarded the Joyce Tracy Fellowship

David Blake (Ph.D., Music History/Theory, 2014) has been awarded the Joyce Tracy Fellowship from the American Antiquarian Society and a Geraldine E. and Corinne L. Parsons Fund Award from the Library of Congress American Folklife Center. This research examines two episodes of popular music at American colleges a century apart: student music at four northeastern colleges (Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth, and Williams) between 1850 and 1872; and the college concerts of Pete Seeger between 1952 and 1962. These grants will contribute to his book project, currently titled Recreation, Education, and Elitism: Popular Music in American College Student Life.

Sonya Hofer Joins the Music Department at Colorado College

hoferSonya Hofer (Ph.D. Music History/Theory – Stony Brook University) has been appointed as Visiting Assistant Professor, Riley Scholar-in-Residence at Colorado College starting Fall 2014. At Colorado College, Hofer will be teaching classes ranging from Experimental Music, Music Fundamentals, and Indie Rock, while also developing a monograph on various forms of Experimental Electronica and Sound Art.

American Musicological Society Honors Professor Sarah Fuller

At its 2013 annual meeting of November 7-10, the American Musicological Society awarded Stony Brook emerita Professor Sarah Fuller with an honorary membership in the Society. Prof. Fuller was recognized for her significant scholarly contributions in musicology as well as her service to the Society on the Board and on a number of key committees.  Prof. Fuller was awarded an honorary membership in the Society for Music Theory in 2009 and was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2011.

David Blake (Ph.D. candidate, Music History/Theory) Awarded Grant Through Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

David Blake (Ph.D. candidate, Music History/Theory) was awarded a grant from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Visiting Scholar Program at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Library and Archives in Cleveland. The grant supports two weeks of research in residence at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. David will be examining primary source radio broadcasts, fanzines, and magazines associated with alternative rock scenes in Cleveland and Champaign-Urbana during the 1980s for a book project on non-mainstream popular music and American universities.

 

David Blake (Ph.D. Candidate) Awarded the Hewitt Pantaleoni Prize

David Blake, Ph.D. student in Music History/Theory, was awarded the Hewitt Pantaleoni Prize for the best graduate student paper delivered at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology, held on March 31st-April 1st at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA.  His paper, titled “Educational Soundscapes: Producing Student Ethnographers and Community Folksingers in the Green Fields of Illinois,” examined collaborations and disconnections between members of a folk music club at the University of Illinois and local folksingers in Urbana-Champaign during the 1960s folk revival.
